  18. Tolkien did that on a few other occasions. According to "The Hobbit",
  19. Bilbo invented the proverb "Escaping goblins to be caught by wolves",
  20. which comes down to us as "Out of the frying pan and into the fire".
  21. His father Bungo used to say "Third time pays for all", which (I
  22. presume) shortened to the modern "Third time's the charm".
