- Tolkien did that on a few other occasions. According to "The Hobbit",
- Bilbo invented the proverb "Escaping goblins to be caught by wolves",
- which comes down to us as "Out of the frying pan and into the fire".
- His father Bungo used to say "Third time pays for all", which (I
- presume) shortened to the modern "Third time's the charm".
