- On a positive note (since it looks like criticism of non-Tolkien writings
- previously positively mentioned isn't allowed here :-) I have found the
- following series to have greater depth and better characterization than
- most recent fantasy though most fall far short of Tolkien.

- Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series by Tas Williams (incomplete)
- Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (incomplete)
- Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz (complete in parts)
- Winter of the World series by Michael Rohan

- Of these the closest thing to the work of love that Tolkien's works are
- is the Deryni series. Kurtz has even written a book that goes into
- detail on how the "magic" of her stories works and exploring a few of
- the ideas further.
