- Note that power lines tend to have a lot of static and crud riding on
- them.
-
- A good way to get better reception of AM is to make a big tuned loop
- antenna, and place it near the AM radio.
-
- to make: get a variable capacitor from an old (tube is best) radio.
- build a wooden cross frame about 3 feet across, and string wire along
- the outer perimiter, doing about 8 laps, to make about 8 turns. Do
- this to make adding/removing turns easy. Better to start with too
- many. Connect wire ends to capacitor, one end to capacitor frame,
- other to terminals that lead to the stationary plates. Place next
- to AM radio, positioning the axis of turns tp be parallel to the
- turns of wire in the radio's AM rod antenna. Not critical though.
- try tuning the loop antenna capacitor to max the reception on the
- radio. If you can't get a peak, and you're looking to get 1520,
- try removing a turn of wire from the loop. Expect to do a fair
- amount of trial and error. Work at it enough and you could be able
- to accomodate the entire AM band with tuning the capacitor. Or
- just tune it once to have a Howie antenna.
