- OK. Here goes.
-
- I first got into Frank's music in 1976-1977. The first show
- I saw was on April Fool's day in 1980 at the Berkely Community
- Theatre. There were two shows and during the middle of the first
- show, a friend and I were walking around waiting for the second set.
- Some scalpers approached us with tickets to sell. We said the show was
- almost over, so we ended up buying two tickets for $5. The reason we
- went early was that my friend brought a camera and tried to bull****
- his way into the first show by saying he was with BAM magazine. the
- lady at the window said she would have let us in, but someone from BAM
- had already shown up. The real part of this story is that for the encore
- of the second show, Frank said that he was going to premier a new song
- that had never been played before. I found out two days later at another
- show that the tune was actually Chunga's Revenge. Needless to say, I went
- out and bought the record soon after.
-
- My favorite show happened in 1982 at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
- Before the show, there was this black guy wearing an all foil costume
- with a cape, riding a bicycle around asking if anyone had a free ticket
- for the spaceman. Sure enough, during the show I look up to the top
- left side of the seats, and there is the spaceman standing perfectly
- still (in a pose). I'm not sure if he ever moved during the whole show.
- The highlight of the show for me was when Frank started the intro to
- Yo Mama (actually the whole song was the highlight). When it started,
- I jumped up from my fifth row seat and yelled my approval. Frank pointed
- at me and nodded his head in acknowledgement. The second show began
- with a great version of Black Napkins. When the song was over, my
- friend turned to me and said "OK, I can go home now" (it was his favorite
- Zappa tune; high on my list also). Of course we did stay for the rest
- of a fine performance. Also coming to mind was some incredible solo's
- by Steve Vai and Frank (had to be one of his best) during Stevie's
- Spanking.
-
- One last story:
-
- In 1984, Frank came to the Bay Area twice. The second time around, he
- played at a place called the Circle Star Theatre. The place is set up
- so that all shows are in the round (spinning stage). Frank was really
- bummed because there was a buzz or hum that was difficult to fix. I
- remember Frank talking to the sound people from the stage saying
- "why can't you guys find the problem. Ever heard of grounding?"
- It was an enjoyable show for me anyway as he broke out a few songs I
- had never seen before such as: My guitar wants to kill your mama,
- Trouble Everyday and the Illinois Enema Bandit.
-
- Unfortunately, Frank's 1988 tour never made it to the west coast.
- I had been calling the hotline and waiting patiently, until it
- was cancelled due to there being problem's with that big band.
-
- At least we still have videos to watch and his music to listen to.
- Frank music will live forever!!!!
