- Sweet Jesu, what the hell do you guys expect. I challenge any one of you to
- name an author who has written at least 7 novels that hasnt turned in ONE that
- isnt up to his best, or even the standard he set for himself. I havent read
- Mostly Harmless yet (I cannot afford the Hardcover, and the libraries is always
- checked out), but even if it is the most insulting piece of drivel ever to
- be inked onto a former tree, does that mean we should go bury Adams and forget
- about him? Maybe we should break his hands to keep him from writing? NO writer
- can constantly improve and have his next book be better than his last. In the
- field of sf/f comedy, look at anthony, asprin, dechancie, et. al. As their
- series progressed, the quality of the novels declined, some slightly, some
- rapidly. (Pratchett is the exception that proves the rule). Even Robert
- Heilein, one of the greatest science fiction authors EVER, turned in some
- real stinkers in his career. My point, I think, is dont give up on Adams yet.
- He may still have the spark in him. LDTTOTS was a good example. Is it good
- comedy? Yes it is. Black comedy. Not the happy evervescent biting satire of
- his earlier work, but indeed the dark brooding comedy that points lucidly to
- some of the absurdities in everyday life. I dont know if there will ever be
- another HH book, nor if there should be. But I look forward to the return of
- Dirk Gently, if Adams can recapure the form of the first book (which WAS better)
