- It's been pointed out before that this thread often becomes just a list
- of what each person likes. Of course this is subjective, but I am
- interested in people's recommendations on a specific genre: Psychedelic
- Music.
-
- Now, I do NOT mean Grateful Dead-type acid rock over blues progressions;
- I do NOT mean techno, noise music, industrial, etc. though I have nothing
- against those genres. The music I am thinking of was produced mainly
- between, say, 1966 and 1974. It usually has kaleidoscopic mixes of real
- sounds, often people speaking, tape loops, sudden changes in mood, weird
- effects, psychedelic lyrics.
-
- Here are a few that I think fit this category:
-
- The United States of America (both band and album title) c. 1968. My
- favorite in this genre. The composer Joe Byrd went on to produce
- a couple more hard to find albums: Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies
- and Yankee Transcendoodle. USA was recently reissued on CD.
-
- Head (unrelated to the film of the same name): 1970. A novelty record,
- really. An early recording of the Moog synthesizer designed
- to be listened to in altered states.
-
- Head (the soundtrack to the Monkees' film) c. 1968. Mostly songs, but it
- does have some interesting montage segments.
-
- The Nude Paper Sermon by Eric Salzman. Completely a montage of musique
- concrete from contemporary sounds.
-
- Of course the Beatles in certain well-known songs.
