- Fluoxetine (TN Prozac) is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is Rx'd
- for depression and individuals with OCD. As far as antidepressants
- are concerned it's RELATIVELY safe. That is, its 'side' effects are
- much less noxious than the more "traditional" antidepressants like the
- tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
-
- Fluoxetine can cause one's anxiety to skyrocket and some people lose
- weight, and some gain. Its half-lives are very long. (takes about 5-6
- weeks for it to get out of your system--and it's still not gone)
-
- It has an active metabolite called norfluoxetine which also has a long
- half-life.
-
- It is similar in action to sertraline (Zoloft), although the jury's
- still out on the specifics of the action on the serotonin system for
- both of these drugs.
-
- A few years ago, there was some controversy in the media and in the
- medical literature over fluoxetine's tendency to provoke or increase
- suicidal thoughts and attempts. There is no clear answer to this one.
-
- Personally, I experienced it, along with an increase in anxiety and a
- lovely agitated state--hate the stuff.
-
- Do a medline search at your local health sciences library. Look for
- articles focusing on fluoxetine and its adverse and toxic effects. I
- did and was quite (unpleasantly) surprised.
-
- Gook luck
