- The short answer is no, there is no simple way. There are ways which
- would work quite effectively, such as chromatography, but they are
- not all that simple. In Australia, it is possible to buy tablets
- OTC which contain, for example 9mg codeine phosphate and 250mg
- asprin. These would be much easier to extract the codeine from
- since it is the only base present. I have heard that such a
- separation has been popular in New Zealand, where more traditional
- substances are difficult to obtain or very expensive; the crude
- illicit codeine is marketed under the name "Home-bake".
- IMHO the recreational value of large doses of codeine (e.g. 175 mg)
- is marginally greater than the side-effects.
