- ...well, as my VIRTUAL CULTURE project is in hypertext rather than a stack fo
- thesis papers, i've been having to hash out SOME sort of mapping system which
- 1: is comprehensible from any point in the matrix ("follow the north star...")
- 2: is conceptually relative without losing specificity, 3: is grounded in
- pre-existant scholarship.
-
- the prototype approach i'm working with right now is based loosely on Karl
- Popper's "3 worlds" theory. there are 3 circle-sets on the screen for any
- given info-nexus.
- SET 1 deals in the concrete details of the whole system. "hardware"
- type stuff, on a holistic scale. Popper's World 1 was the large world of
- "objective" "stuff."
- SET 2 deals in over-riding trends of the evolution of the whole, *AS
- ENCOUNTERED BY THE SOLITARY VIEW.POINT* ... World 2 was the "subjective" world
- of "conscious" "stuff."
- SET 3 deals with the filigreed substructures which hold the 2 other
- sets together. this stuff is a RESULT of the interaction of the 2. World 3 was
- the realm of artifact and medium.
- in net.terms, the system-as-hardware would reside in SET 1. the
- system-as-conscious but distant users would reside in SET 2. the
- system-as-info.flux (memetic medium) would reside in SET 3.
-
- "hey, now," he says, as he dons his kerosene-soaked lab-coat ;) "it's just a
- prototype. besides, at least i'm trying something, even if it's just sticking
- my neck on the chopping block..."
