  11. IT is interesting that Camilla-gate envoked the probable use of Cellular
  12. phone links that have to remind me of a well known local event but
  13. internationally insignificant.

  15. There was a Cabinet Minister of the Provincial Government of British
  16. Columbia, Canada named Bud Smith who was taped having a private conversation
  17. with firstly a female reporter which implied a tryst while he was married to
  18. another woman and secondly to an associate in which he made disparaging
  19. remarks about a recently let go employee assailing his competence.  Both
  20. conversations were private ones made on a cellular phone.

  22. They were taped by a jelous ex-lover and news cameraman of the female
  23. reporter, then leaked to the Ministers opposition critic one Moe Sihota who
  24. in turn released them at a press conference for all to hear.

  26. After the usual turn of events and the Minister's eventual resignation one
  27. strange turn of events took place.  The dismissed employee sued Smith for
  28. liable even though the conversation was a private one not intended for public
  29. dessemination.  This scandal eventually, compounding with some others,
  30. brought down the government that Mr. Smith belonged to and now Mr. Sihota
  31. finds himself a Minister of the Crown.

  33. The suit to the best of my knowledge has not been heard but settled out of
  34. court for undisclosed terms (someone correct me if I am wrong).  The question
  35. here is is there any such thing as privacy anywhere when communicating with
  36. any sort of electronic transmission device?  It is scarey to think that
  37. politicians or those in the middle of a divorce for example must guard their
  38. words when speaking to their lawyers on the phone or risk losing their
  39. child's custody.

  41. The irony is that Mr Sihota, who I thought showed an incredible lack of
  42. judgement and understanding of fair play, basically got away with murder and
  43. was rewarded handsomely because the average citizen does not understand the
  44. importance of privacy and the dangerous precedent that has been set.
