- For some reason, I find that idea to be the most undemocratic thing
- I have heard of. Talk about removing personal freedom. I don't think
- it will work. I just have a strong hunch that such a concept will
- not work. There will always be an underground bbs network for people
- to freely spread their intellectual ideas and or software. That is
- my impression.
-
- The drug problem in the United States is a difficult and widespread
- one. There have been many attempts (not sure if it has been a "tried"
- effort or a laxadaisical one) to stop drugs in the US. With failure.
- The criminals continue to thrive.
-
- In other cases, there have been constraints on many things. But the
- underground economy thrives. The IRS and Revenue Canada want part of
- this underground economy. In some cases, it would make sense to
- eliminate high debts. But on the other hand, many view the pundits
- as the creators of those debts and thus the mass should not suffer.
-
- The question is where does it end. How much freedoms do people want to
- lose or compromise for the benefit of all. The software companies may
- benefit in the end to an end on piracy. But do the people win? Not if
- their personal freedom is taken away. If the software giants are
- really concerned about piracy, they should start thinking about putting
- most programs on CD-ROMS. End of story. And its heading that way.
-
- There have been suggestions of a cashless society. One that operates
- on credits and cards made of plastic with your whole life history
- attached to it. It appears as if some people have been watching too
- much Total Recall or something. I don't think it can be an acceptable
- means. Liquidity is important in any vehicle or society. For some
- reason, I just love holding cash. I think I have had enough of the
- credit card...grin.
-
- In the end, it is a question of what people want. The recent riots
- in the UK on the poll tax were a strong suggestion of what people did
- not accept. Growing taxes in the province of Ontario and Canada as a
- whole are creating tensions among the people to the point where
- something had better be done, or a revolt of sorts is on its way.
-
- In the end, the idea of licensing bbses is simply ludicrous. If Britain
- can prove to me that it is completely democratic and not socialist, I
- will be happy. But with their tax rate and whims/ideas leave a lot to
- be desired.
