  20. The most likely explanation is that the witness is lying.  The reason
  21. that there were no guards is that it made no sense for there to be
  22. any.  I can't imagine an officer who, short of being out of his mind,
  23. would send soldiers to guard the body of an executed criminal, as if
  24. it were some object of value or as if the army had nothing else to do.

  28. Exactly.  So let's play according to the rules.  In a whodunnit one
  29. assumes that people do things for which they have a motive.  One
  30. doesn't assume, however, that everything everyone says is true.  I
  31. have no positive knowledge as to what the Romans did with the bodies
  32. of crucified troublemakers, but the only reasonable guess is that they
  33. simply discarded them, to be devoured by street dogs or picked up from
  34. the rubbish heap and buried by friends and family.
