  12. I say that the phrase "Save the Earth" is the worst thing to hit
  13. environmentalism and green politics since the Industrial Revolution.
  14. Let me count the ways:

  16. 1) its ridiculous
  17.  
  18.     - nothing that humans are doing right now threatens the
  19.       earth as a planetary body or a geological entity.
  20.  
  21. 2) its foolish
  22.  
  23.     - few people seriously believe that anything humans are
  24.       doing will eliminate life on earth either. 
  25.  
  26. 3) its simplistic
  27.  
  28.     - the effects of human activity are on the types and distributions
  29.       of ecosystems on the planet, not the presence of life
  30.           here. The choice is not life on earth, but particular
  31.           kinds of life, particular kinds of landscapes.

  33. 4) its a straw man
  34.  
  35.     - all it takes is for someone to come up with an easily
  36.       understood, 6 word phrase that refutes the simplistic
  37.           nonsense of "Save the Earth", and public opinion will
  38.           shift with the wind. "Wise Use" isn't it, but they're
  39.           working on it.

  41. Put another way: if you buy support with simplicities, someone else
  42. can always buy it back at a cheaper price.
