  28. At noon today the first session of the 103rd Congress convened.
  29. This will be a dynamic year in Washington, with significant changes
  30. on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.  Much of what occurs during
  31. these next twelve months will have profound implications for the
  32. physics and astronomy community.
  33.  
  34. The AIP Office of Government and Institutional Relations in
  35. Washington provides a broad range of science policy information
  36. services.  The following is a brief summary of these services,
  37. which are provided without charge.  Please call us whenever we can
  38. be of assistance!

  40. INFORMATION PRODUCTS:
  41.  
  42. FYI: These one or two page summaries of science policy developments
  43. are issued weekly.  If you are not directly receiving FYI by
  44. electronic mail, and would like to do so, please contact
  45. NEWFYI@AIP.ORG   There is no charge for FYI, and we welcome new
  46. subscribers.
  47.  
  48. In answer to many inquiries, FYI is not copyrighted.  We encourage
  49. its use in other electronic and printed formats.  We would
  50. appreciate it if you would let us know that FYI material is being
  51. redistributed, as it assists us in tracking its utilization.

  53. FYI is also found under the "News from Washington" menu item of
  54. AIP's Physics Information Network, PINET, as well as other
  55. electronic services.  Call us for further information.

  57. "Communicating With Congress" - The Brochure:  A new four-page
  58. brochure with guidelines on writing to, or visiting with, Members
  59. of Congress is now being printed.  Single copies of this brochure
  60. are provided without charge.  Larger numbers of the brochure are
  61. available for a minimal fee to cover printing charges.  To obtain
  62. a copy, send a self-addressed, business-sized stamped envelope to:

  66. "Communicating With Congress" - The Workshop Kit:  Also available
  67. is a kit designed to be used in workshops and other group
  68. presentations.  Topics covered include the basic legislative
  69. process, key Members of Congress, and communications guidelines.

  72. This spring our office will produce a summary covering the federal
  73. budget for physics in the AAAS report, "Research and Development,
  74. FY 1994."  Please contact this office for information on the
  75. report.

  78. INFORMATION SERVICES:

  80. We are also available to respond to legislative inquiries.  Our
  81. office has access to an electronic legislative data service, and
  82. files are maintained on a wide variety of science policy issues.

  85. Members of Congress: Voting records, addresses and telephone
  86. numbers, names of science policy legislative assistants and
  87. appointment secretaries, information on district offices, and
  88. political biographies.

  90. Science Policy Committees: New committee rosters, names of key
  91. staff members, areas of jurisdiction, addresses and telephone
  92. numbers.

  94. Scheduling Information: This office tracks hearing schedules, and
  95. can provide you with the congressional calendar.  Call us before
  96. planning an event at which you plan to invite a Member of Congress
  97. to check the calendar.

  99. Congressional Documents, Reports, Bills:  A library is maintained
  100. of major science policy documents.  Contact our office if you need
  101. a copy of a section of one of these documents, or need ordering
  102.  information.

  104. Bill Status:  Information can be provided on a bill, its
  105. cosponsors, and the latest action taken by Congress.
  106.  
  107. Hearing Testimony:  Extensive files are maintained of available
  108. written testimony from hearings which we have attended.

  110. General Information:  If you need assistance in determining the
  111. difference between an authorization bill and an appropriations
  112. bill, the name of President Clinton's new science adviser, the way
  113. that Senator Barbara Mikulski spells her name, what the names of
  114. your new (or old) Members of Congress are, or a map of Capitol
  115. Hill, please call us.
