- NOAA COLLOQUIUM ON OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION
- SILVER SPRING, MD

- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
- (NOAA) will again sponsor a four-week colloquium on operational
- environmental prediction to be held at the new NOAA complex in
- Silver Spring, Maryland from 8 June through 2 July, 1993.
- The purpose of the colloquium is to encourage graduate students
- who are in stages of a relevant doctoral program to pursue
- careers in the environmental sciences. The colloquium will
- consist of a series of lectures and interactive workshops and
- demonstrations on various aspects of environmental prediction
- conducted at NOAA, and afford opportunities for discussions with
- NOAA scientists. The lectures will include the following topics:

- Climate Monitoring and Prediction;
- Weather Analysis and Prediction;
- Hydrologic Prediction;
- Oceanographic Prediction and
- Coastal Ocean Processes;
- Satellite Products for Numerical
- Weather Prediction and Climate
- and Global Change Studies;
- Living Marine Resources.

- Organization:

- The colloquium is being coordinated by an organizing committee
- composed of representatives from the various NOAA line offices
- and the University of Maryland. The lectures will be presented
- primarily by scientists within NOAA who are experts in the
- colloquium topics. A few invited speakers will provide
- additional expertise to the program. Lecture notes will be
- prepared by the students working iteratively with the lecturers,
- and published following the conclusion of the colloquium. Ample
- time will be provided between lecturers for discussion and
- consultation with the lecturers.

- Participants and Support:

- It is anticipated that approximately 20 students will be selected
- for the program. Participants are expected to be PhD. candidates
- who have recently been accepted in a doctoral program and who
- have an established or developing interest in the environmental
- sciences. Each participant in the program will receive a stipend
- of $2,000. In addition, the actual cost of travel, not to exceed
- the expenses of economy travel, dormitory housing on the campus
- of the University of Maryland, and daily local transportation
- will be provided.

- To apply, please send a letter of application stating your
- interest in the environmental sciences. The application
- materials must include:

- Transcripts for undergraduate and graduate courses;

- A resume which should include any publications,
- fellowships, and awards received and;
-
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty members who
- know your work well.

- The transcripts and letters of recommendation must be sent
- directly by the university and faculty members to the address
- below. The deadline for receipt of applications is February15,
- 1993. Awards will be announced about April 1, 1993. All
- applicants will receive consideration without regard to race,
- color, age, national or ethnic origin, or sex.
