- Ever since I got my car four years ago ('78 Buick LeSabre) I've been
- using 92 or 93 octane gas. A couple weeks ago, however, I decided to
- try the cheap stuff (87 octane). The engine started to ping and
- knock violently, so I retarded the timing a few degrees (no timing
- light, just touch and go). Well, the knocking and pinging went away,
- but now the car misses and backfires during acceleration. I can't
- seem to find a good midpoint where it is advanced enough to
- avoid backfiring, but retarded enough to avoid knocking. Am I missing
- something here, or should I just go back to using the expensive gas?
