- I had the same problem, many years ago, with a '51 Chev. After receiving
- dire reports of how much it would cost to replace the transmission, I
- fixed it myself by simply adjusting the linkage. It was similar to the
- linkage of a bathroom sink drain, with a rod going thru a clamp, with a
- thumbscrew.

- Incidentally, it was a couple of experiences like this, where the professionals
- insisted they were right, and I in my naivete still wondered, and then found
- out that I was correct and they were wrong ... which started me on my
- "career" of slowly trying bigger and bigger jobs, and learning (in a
- small way) about cars.
