- BS> Hello everyone, I'm another "newbie" and thought I'd say hi and
- BS> introduce myself. I've been totally deaf since the age of four, when
- BS> I lost my hearing as a result of spinal meningitis. I attended
- BS> Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind for four years, then was
- BS> mainstreamed because the VSDB curriculum did not meet my parents'
- BS> expectations. I graduated from high school in 1982, received an
- BS> Associate in Applied Science degree in Computer Processing in 1984,
- BS> and have been working as a programmer/operator for a retirement
- BS> community for the past eight years.
-
- Wow, sounds like fun. I to am a new user here. I have only been deaf
- for about 2 years though. I lost my hearing(among other things) to two
- brain tumors. I have been into computers for over 10 years but have
- only starting working professionally as a programmer in the past 6
- months. Im working for Total Systems now. Oh well, dont suppose you
- would know where or what that is anyway.
-
- BS> In 1985, I received a single channel cochlear implant, which I now
- BS> feel was not worth the trouble. In fact, I hardly ever use it any
- BS> more. I have considered surgery to install the newer multiple channel
- BS> implant, but at this point I think that I will wait a bit longer and
- BS> let the technology advance further.
-
- I have been wondering about these things. Exactly what will a multiple
- channel implant do. If I guess right, it will allow me to hear a few
- sounds on different frequencies(as opposed to only one frequency in the
- single channel ones, yes?). I too am waiting to see where technology
- will go. I dont think I will see any breakthroughs in my life time
- though. Im certainly not waiting for any anyways. Im presently
- attending sign language classes at one of the local technical schools.
- Im not much good at it yet but that will change. Fortunately my speach
- is still quite good and they say it will stay that way as long as I
- continue to use it. I plan to maintain certain ties with the hearing
- world as well as making new ones with my new "family". Glad to meet
- you. Talk to you later(ttyl)...
-
- Oh, and Merry Christmas.
-
- ... Even a small star shines in the darkness.
