- Well here is a subject not too far from the "racial" delimma at hand.
-
- At the school site which I have the fortunate (or not so fortunate) luck
- of being a part of, Students are given a bus ride to travel about 40
- min. to integrate. People from various places in the county are brought
- over and offered a vigorous program in Computer/Math/Science as "bait" to
- get them and make the ride worth it. Their goal is this ideal:
- The "ride-in" kids would get a better education at the same time rubbing
- off on the neighborhood kids, and learning to appreciate them and
- vice-versa.
-
- Well at first there was a problem. The teachers, being "top-notch" did
- not want the local kids being less informed to be in their classes. Thus
- the program did not help the local kids. Then the new administration
- changed this and opened and even forced the "locals" into higher-division
- classes. Since most of the bused-in students came from conservative
- backgrounds it made many of them leave to private schools. Many teachers
- also left.(Over 1/4 of the staff in 2 years!) Now the remaining bused-in
- students are'nt getting their top-notch programs due to lack of
- interest, and the local kids are'nt getting much either. No-one is happy
- with this arrangement!
-
-
- Though it has been somewhat of a failure, It also has had its success.
- There are many people who have enjoyed and have learned much from this
- school. But the question remains, is integration good, and if so how can
- we go about it?
-
- I personally support it because it has worked for me. I have changed
- myself from a conservative "I don't want to be in the same room as
- "them"" person to being a supporter and tutor and I find myself being
- inspired by Malcom X books now. I happy I found my mistakes. But most
- people don't believe it has worked for them. What is wronge?
-
- Thank you!
