- At one time I believe it was fairly standard for home burglar alarms to
- be hooked up to the local police precinct. Of course this was probably
- because only the wealthier people were able to afford such systems and
- the total number of systems was relatively small.

- Now it's more and more common for homes to have burglar alarms, but all
- of them that I have heard of are hooked up to a local alarm company.
- The alarm company is responsible for responding to alarms and notifying
- the police when appropriate.
