- While reading article <1830@tongo.UUCP>, I noticed that
- joes@adpgate.UUCP (Joe Biehner) said the following:
- >My wife recently received a book club promo packet for technical books. Before
- >jumping in, I wanted to get some kind of a consensus about either the books
- >being offered OR the book club.
- >
- >The club is apparently the 'Library of Computer and Information Sciences, A
- >Newbridge Book Club'. Has anyone ever heard of it before? Any bad experiences?
-
- I have joined (and was dropped from) this club twice. I haven't checked with
- many other clubs, but if you go more than a year or so without ordering (and
- have fulfilled your membership requirements by purchasing your "required"
- books) you are dropped from their mailing list and are never bothered again.
-
- When I joined, I got a set of five AT&T UNIX manuals for $9.99, as opposed to
- the over $100 they would have cost from my college bookstore. Their prices
- seem to be pretty reasonable and even a bit less than your average bookstore,
- especially with their "bonus coupons."
-
- The only problem I had with them was that their selection was a bit narrow
- (at the time, 1989, they had lots of MVS and VM books but only a handful of
- UNIX titles). Since I was living in Santa Clara, the ready availability of a
- nearby Computer Literacy Bookstore pretty much obviated my need for the club.
-
- Like any other club, the basic consumer point of view is to figure out what
- the intro books would cost you from a bookstore, along with the "required"
- number of purchases, and see if the prices average out to a savings for you.
