  16. NEW PROJECT:   INVESTIGATING RIGHT WING FUNDING ON CAMPUS

  19.     The University Conversion Project is a new clearinghouse 
  20. which promotes peace activism and investigative journalism on 
  21. campus.   In March of 1993, we are producing and distributing 
  22. a special 40-page issue of our publication on investigating 
  23. and questioning the right-wing funding of policy programs and 
  24. student movements on campus.  We invite all of you to assist 
  25. us in this effort by sending stories about right-wing groups 
  26. who have disrupted progressive student and faculty 
  27. organizing.  We also seek information on  international 
  28. studies, polisci and other academic programs whose politics 
  29. have been tainted by funding from right-wing corporations, 
  30. agencies & foundations.

  36.     History has shown that movements for social change are most 
  37. successful when campuses are active.  Partly in response to 
  38. this fact, military contractors and conservative foundations 
  39. have, in their own words, attempted to "capture the 
  40. ideological high ground" by funding right-wing campus 
  41. newspapers (through the Madison Center for Educational 
  42. Affairs) and endowing professorships and research programs 
  43. which reflect their political views.  Academic programs with 
  44. a public service mission have, in many cases, become 
  45. mouthpieces for military-dependent firms such as Raytheon, 
  46. Olin, and McDonnell Douglas.  Many student activists we work 
  47. with find obstacles placed in their path by well-funded 
  48. rivals crusading to maintain militarism, sexism and 
  49. ethnocentrism under the guise of opposition to "political 
  50. correctness."

  52.     Thousands of students and faculty members are hungry for 
  53. tools to counter this right-wing agenda.  UCP has developed a 
  54. reputation for helping young investigators get started, and 
  55. we have built up a strong activist base at over 80 campuses 
  56. who puts the packets we create to good use.

  58.     Recognizing that we cannot match the right-wing dollar for 
  59. dollar, we can instead expose their funding of campus 
  60. activities and encourage people to question their true 
  61. motives and intentions.  For example, our intern Erin Bush of 
  62. the University of Pittsburgh has exposed how Raytheon and 
  63. other military contractors fund the Institute for Foreign 
  64. Policy Analysis, an affiliate of Tufts University.  The 
  65. Institute works to "anticipate and preclude arms control 
  66. agreements" according to its annual report, and its officers 
  67. who teach at Tufts have received hefty salaries for "outside 
  68. activities" such as countering the European peace movement 
  69. and attacking critics of the Patriot missile.

  71.     Few publications have addressed the effect of money on the 
  72. politics of university programs, and no other organization to 
  73. our knowledge is working to distribute research and 
  74. organizing guides to newer activists who are more likely to 
  75. use them.  In just over one year, we have become known for 
  76. providing information on military influence that is not 
  77. available elsewhere.  We invite any organization who 
  78. effectiveness has been hampered by right-wing efforts to 
  79. assist us in compiling this research guide and in 
  80. distributing it nationally.
