- ELSA AGRAMONTE FACULTY-STUDENT LECTURES COMMITTEE
-
- December 23, 1992
-
- Dear Friends,
-
- This letter is to inform you of plans for a series of U.S.
- campus lectures by Elsa Agramonte, a Cuban attorney who specializes in
- women's affairs (biographical notes enclosed). The lectures are
- scheduled for April 1993. Agramonte will speak on "Cuban Women Today."
-
- The lectures will provide a rare opportunity for dialogue in
- the spirit of free speech and academic freedom among people of diverse
- or even opposing points of view. Such an exchange can only benefit the
- academic community in the United States.
-
- In order to ensure that Agramonte will be granted a visa from
- the U.S. Department of State, she will need invitations from prominent
- academic figures, departments, programs, and student organizations.
- The invitations should include the speaker's full name (Elsa Agramonte
- Herna'ndez), that she is being extended an invitation to appear on
- your campus during April 1993, and any other information that would
- give Agramonte an idea of what the invitees have in mind for her
- visit.
-
- Invitations should be personally addressed to Elsa Agramonte
- Herna'ndez, Havana, Cuba and faxed or mailed to the lectures
- committee. We will take responsibility for forwarding them to her in
- Cuba.
-
- Because of the procedures and time involved in getting a visa
- for April, 1993, invitations need to be in the hands of the committee
- by January 15.
-
- Applications for funds to help cover the expenses of her visit
- should be submitted as soon as possible to academic departments,
- speaker programs, and student groups for approval this spring.
- Because of the limited time available for the tour, final decisions on
- itinerary will be based on breadth of support and funding
- possibilities for the visit in each city.
-
- Funds are needed ahead of time to secure travel and other
- expenses of the visit. In accordance with the Cuban Assets Control
- Regulations of the U.S. government, Agramonte cannot receive
- honoraria. Funds will be raised by hosting faculty and students on
- each campus in accordance with these regulations. A central account
- for the purposes of collecting the funds to cover the expenses of the
- visit will be opened. Checks should be made payable to: Agramonte
- Lectures Committee. We will forward you the federal ID # of the
- account as soon as it is opened.
-
- Please let other faculty and students know about the tour and
- solicit their support.
-
- Since we will be organizing the visit in part during winter
- break, it will be useful for us to have the home address and phone
- number of anyone extending an invitation to Agramonte or offering
- to help in other ways.
-
- Any inquires should be addressed to:
