  18. One argument used for the death penalty in the US is cost.

  20. The US appears to be the "only Western industrial nation
  21. employing capital punishment. Other industrial nations, such as
  22. South Africa and Japan, stil have laws allowing for capital
  23. punishment, but use them rarely if at all."

  25. "No one has attempted to calculate the costs of an execution in
  26. Washington state (site of the hanging yesterday--gmd), but
  27. studies elsewhere suggest it costs far more than incarceration.

  29. California is spending more than $90 million annually on
  30. capital cases, and until this year hadn't executed anyone since
  31. 1972.  Texas, the national leader in the number of executions,
  32. spedns an estimated $2.3 million per execution.  That compares
  33. to an average cost of incarceration in Washington state of $25,000
  34. per maximum-security prisoner per year."

  38. My feeling is that it has never been cost or justice or
  39. retribution that has driven the death penalty in the US -- it's
  40. state terror against the poor, predominantly African American and
  41. Latino communities whose sons and daughters are singled out.
  42. The media  play up the horrible cases, the sadistic brutes that kill
  43. children or multiple victims, but ignore the majority of the
  44. capital cases.
