- Been having a hard time with Ultrix 4.3 and DMS.
-
- I installed Ultrix 4.3 on our DMS server Friday. It works fine.
-
- I installed it on one DMS client Saturday -- and it seemed to work OK.
- I had /dlenv0 set up with Ultrix 4.3, SCSI CAM, Motif --
- the whole ball of wax.
-
- So, I thought I'd be smart and put a couple of "customizations"
- in a few files (etc/rc.local, etc/resolv.conf) in the /dlenv0
- area, figuring they would be copied over to the the REAL root
- in the /dlclient0 area.
-
- Then I started having real problems. I'd try the initial
- boot and the client would come back with error messages about
- missing files in the /sys/conf area. I went through a couple
- of rounds of deleting and re-adding the DMS client and
- got similar results, BUT with varying files -- some were
- in /sys/conf but files in /tmp were also missing.
-
- I figured I'd messed up my DMS environment area, so I deleted the
- whole thing and re-dms-ed it. This time I didn't touch any
- thing in the DMS environment, but now the problem is worse.
- Every attempt to install fails. The client starts and
- bombs out when it tries to configure itself on account of
- missing files. I poke around on the client -- and
- sure 'nuf, the files aren't there. Now, once the client machine
- actually did get up to multi-user mode (after complaining
- during the configure), but it didn't start the X window server.
-
-
- Now there are a couple of unusual things happening on
- the hardware side.
-
- First, this is a DECstation 5000/25. Ultrix 4.3 doesn't immediately
- recognize the mouse. As the release notes say
- 2.5.1 Personal DECstation 5000 Mouse Configuration
- After an install or upgrade, the mouse for the Personal DECstation
- takes some time to become configured. When the mouse finally comes
- online, you will see a message similar to the following:
- 0x54 A V1.0 DEC VSXXXX-BB - 3884
- This message appears at various times during my attempts to the
- boot the client under DMS, and I wonder if the unpredictable appearence
- could be causing the problem.
-
- Second, our network is in rather sorry state. Perhaps, some packets
- are getting lost. The DMS client thinks it is creating files,
- but it isn't?
-
- How about you other people? Is anyone else having similar problems?
-
- I'm about ready to call it quits and stay with Ultrix 4.3 on
- the server and Ultrix 4.2 on the DMS clients.

- If you saw two messages from me about this,
- I did try to cancel the first one.
