- It ought to be possible to number a book:
- i, ii, 1, 2, 3, 4, iii, iv
- and
- i, ii, 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, iii, iv
- I suspect that Frame needs to recognise two-layer page numbering so that
- you simply pick that for the real chapters of your book and normal page
- numbers for the rest and then nothing clever is required because there
- are two independent sets of page numbers. Similarly it should have a
- different number series for each permissible format so that even normal
- numbering works because it recognises the roman sequence is different.
- After all who ever wants i, ii, 3, 4, v, vi ??
-
- I suspect that the same goes for paragraph numbering.
-
- With Regard to book files ( Sun FrameMaker 3 ):
-
- It ought to be possible in any frame document to specify that any or all of
- Master Pages, Reference Pages, Paragraph formats, character formats,
- table formats, variables, ... come from a specific file, or from the book file.
- It should be possible to add extra pages or formats in the document file to
- override the default. This would reduce disk space used - a real problem - and
- reduce maintenance of templates. I would actually prefer that the book file
- merely contained a list of files and other true control information, and never
- held any document related stuff such as paragraph formats - i.e. have a second
- control file (optional) to hold Master Pages etc. It should be possible to
- process the book file with awk/shell without converting it to a mif file.
-
- It should be possible to specify a restricted view onto
- the format lists to be used as default within a document.
- This feature would be extremely useful - often you have specific
- formats used on the master pages, etc which the author never uses, but
- which you keep in the catalog so that if the Master Page or control
- section is mutilated then it can be put back without having to get the
- formats from somewhere else (possibly another site!)
-
- The Print dialogue box should be able to remember filenames instead of
- always generating a new one - real hassle with fmprint/fmbatch where
- you actually end up specifying that the printer is a file and trapping it
- in the print script.
-
- It should be possible to spell check or search a complete document in one go,
- files should Open if a problem is found, the document dictionary should be
- common to all files in the document - probably need a merge facility to allow
- multiple authors (it may be that sometimes you need to restrict some things
- to a specific file, but this should be the exception as far as frame is
- concerned).
-
- It should be possible to produce a single frame file containing the entire
- document (uneditable) - I suspect this might be in frame 4.
-
- There should be an fmcopy command that will copy a complete document.
-
- fmbatch should support SaveAs on a book to mean SaveAs for each file in
- the document - you simply specify output directory and filetype suffix.
