- I always assume, when looking at any stated disk access results, that
- at least some of the data is pulled from RAM buffers (system and/or
- controller) rather than the disk itself. This doesn't make the test
- meaningless - to me, at least - since a) I expect to see the same phenomenon
- when running our applications and b), different vendors have, over a period
- of time, shown a wide range of capability in making use of RAM for this
- purpose. For instance, SUN appeared to have implemented dynamic disk
- buffer allocation earlier than HP (it has just done so in its latest
- HP-UX release) and DEC's ULTRIX systems require you to specify a fixed
- memory allocation for buffers in the config file.
