- OK, here's a topic that's kind of "retro," but I have seen a bit of traffic
- lately on the net for how to use an old mac. Here's my solution, and some
- questions:
-
- I have made a Supercard application to run on my old Plus (w/4MB RAM)
- for my one-and-a-half year old son. All it does is show bitmaps of
- animals, etc., every few seconds, and it intercepts all key and mouse
- events (he likes to bang on the keyboard).
-
- I want it to run just by having the machine turned on (he can do it
- himself; he's pretty precocious). I only have an 800K internal drive,
- and I want as much room as possible for the bitmaps.
-
- I named the application "Finder" and stuck a System on the disk. I had
- to use Resedit to trim the System file and application by hand to make
- them even smaller, because the application is fairly large (about
- 500K). I sliced out all the color stuff, and minimalized the text
- messages (It now just says "Error! for everything),
-
- Any hints on what else I can cut from the System file without making it go
- BOOM? What's the smallest you've ever gotten a 6.0.x system to be?
-
- If you are familiar with Supercard internals, is there anything I can slice
- out of the application? I'm sure there is a lot of waste in this context.
-
- The images came from a Hypercard stack originally. Is there a small FREE
- (or shareware) hypercard stack browser/player?
-
- As another approach, is there a super-small application that does this
- kind of thing (say, for stand-alone self-running ads) that just shows a
- series of bitmaps (I can convert them to any format if necessary)? At
- best, it would run under an older System so it could be smaller, with
- more room on the disk for images. It could even be optimized for the
- small screen. Supercard takes up a lot of room for things I don't need
- once the app is ready, like the script editor, etc. I'd write my own,
- but I don't have the time right now.
