- I am a sysadmin for a small Mac system, all of which are SE/30s. I am
- having a peculiar problem with one of the machines. All of a sudden
- we noticed that when the system folder was in alpha mode, we had
- no entries past the "C"s. This is, of course, virtually impossible
- as the machine won't run without a system. I assumed someone moved
- system components accidently, did a find file for system, and there
- is no system listed anywhere! So, I looked with Tools, and Tools
- see nothing past the "C"s. Then I ran Disinfectant 2.9, and it
- found no components past the "C"s in the System folder. ResEdit
- also fails to see anything in the system folder beyond the "C"s.
-
- When one tries to copy system components into the system folder,
- it starts to copy then says it cannot do so, as this file already
- exists there... not do I want to overwrite it... odd. I copied
- a non system file into the system folder, and it was visible for
- a few minutes, then disappeared. When I tested and tried to copy
- it in again, the copy started, then quit, saying the file already
- existed there, and gave me a choice of continue, which aborts, and
- cancel. When the attempt to copy quit, the file appeared, highlitted,
- for about two seconds, then disappeared. After a few tries, I managed
- to catch the file and drag it out of the system folder, where it
- remained visible until I trashed it...?
-
- I have no idea what is going on, and no one with whom I have
- talked has any idea of the problem either. Does anyone out
- there have any experience with a problem of this sort? I would
- very much appreciate advice!
-
- Since this is apparently not a problem that is common, it might
- be a good idea to reply to me via email rather than use up space
- on netnews. But which ever, I would appreciate any help you can
- give! Thanks! :>)
