- If rebuilding the desktop leaves you with generic icons, make sure that
- all your bundle bits for that file creator family are set correctly. I
- don't just mean that the application or INIT or whichever file actually
- contains the icons should have its bundle bit set, I mean also that no other
- files with the same creator type should have their bundle bits set, or else
- the Finder may try (unsuccessfully) to extract icon information from them,
- giving you generic icons.
- As an example I once had generic icons for most of the files in my System
- Folder, and rebuilding the desktop didn't cure this. It turned out that
- a file supplied with Farallon Liaison, a network bridging package, had the
- same creator as the System (MACS), had its bundle bit erroneously set and
- preceded the System alphabetically. Result: the Finder looked in this file
- for icons, found none and thought, "Oh well, better give all MACS files
- generic icons". Unsetting the bundle bit of the offending file restored all
- my icons
