  16. At Northwestern University we offer free printing on HP Deskwriters,
  17. and laser printing at $0.20 per page.  Especially since the
  18. advent of TrueType, this has been a problem, since running at the
  19. best quality the Deskjets can give very good output and use a lot
  20. of ink.  On one hand we don't want to undercut our market for
  21. laser printing, on the other we can't really afford free printing
  22. when the costs are too high. We would like to offer some sort
  23. of free draft printing, however.

  25. Toward that end, I would like advice: Has anyone tried to hack the 
  26. Deskwriter drivers so they will only print in draft mode?

  28. Since they come up in Normal mode by default, it is not just a matter of 
  29. hiding the buttons,  and the default settings are not stored in an obvious
  30. resource.
