  18. In article <haley.726402086@husc.harvard.edu> Elizabeth Haley,
  19. haley@husc11.harvard.edu writes:
  20. >>Why would I pay FSF (or anyone else with the same philosophy)
  21. >>X thousand dollars to develop software and then have no way
  22. >>to recover my costs?  Because it is good for society?  I have
  23. >>heard these arguments before in other political and economic
  24. >>discussions.  Who is paying for development of GCC?  Why?
  25. >
  26. >Everyone. Everyone should. that would make it very cheap to produce,
  27. >and even cheaper to maintain...

  29. After reading through this thread, it seems that there's a perspective on
  30. the FSF that seems to have been missed...that their software distribution
  31. policy (copyleft) is a step towards domination of the unix utility
  32. market. My unix friends tell me that most of the base unix utilities are
  33. FSF-made (& better than the original); GCC, Emacs, YACC, etc. are better
  34. at what they do than the commercial versions. Even better, they're free.
  35. How, then, can a commercial firm compete against well-produced, good
  36. quality,
  37. el-cheapo software? They can't...for long. The implications are, well,
  38. interesting.
