  14. I recently bought a used IIci running sys 7 and I have a pretty
  15. baffling problem (Well, baffling to me anyway).  Everything was
  16. working just fine when someone suggested that I might improve my
  17. system's performance by running speed disk from the Norton Utilities.

  19. I did that and the dialogue box informed me that I could not optimize
  20. because files were open, but that I could de-fragment files, which I
  21. opted to do.  After the de-fragmenting of files, virtually nothing
  22. will open from the finder.  I get a message that says ..

  24. "XXXX could not be opened because an error of type -50 occured"
  25.  
  26. This happens with virtually everything including Norton its self.  I
  27. can open speed disk, but that is of no help. I can open SOME files
  28. saved on floppy, but not others.  Disabling extensions is no use
  29. either. When I reboot, I get this message....

  38. This also happens when I try to empty the trash, although after
  39. clicking on OK, the trash does empty.

  41. I am running StartUp Manager, but it also gives me a error -50
  42. message.

  44. So, what can I do to save this machine?  I have had  success copying
  45. files onto the floppy drive and I do have the system disks.  However,
  46. I would like NOT to have to reload everything.

  48. Please try to help, I miss my mac already.

  50. E-mail is prefered, if possible, since news feeds here are slow,
  51. e-mail is pretty fast.
