- The standard line given whenever anyone mentions hooking a high speed modem up
- to their mac is "you have to get a hardware handshaking cable."
-
- In my experience, this simply is not true. Granted, you will probably get faster
- throughput using hardware handshaking. BUT if you cannot get hold of a hardware
- handshaking cable right away, there is no reason you should not be able to use a
- standard Mac modem cable and software (XON/XOFF) handshaking.
-
- I am in a special situation where even though I have access to hardware
- handshaking cables, I am forced to use software handshaking on my 14.4k modem.
- This is because I use the modem to run my uupc node and my software, uupc 3.0,
- only works with a standard modem cable, it will not work with hardware
- handshaking cables because that disables uupc's control of the DTR line, which
- it needs to hang up the modem.
-
- My throughput at 9600 using software handshaking is just fine. (I don't have
- anybody to call at 14.4 to check that out -- I'm ahead of the Joneses). I have
- found the improvement when using hardware handshaking to be very minimal. At
- higher speeds than 9600, the handshaking difference might become more noticable,
- but there is definitely no reason why you cannot use a standard Mac modem cable
- if you need to.
-
- This is important to know if you are using a Mac Plus, Classic and a couple
- other models (LC?) which will simply not support hardware handshaking due to
- braindead design.
-
- One problem you might encounter -- if the modem's factory defaults are set for
- hardware handshaking, you may not be able to get your Mac to talk to the modem
- until you find a way to change the handshaking setting (borrow a friend's 80x86
- machine and use it to change the settings). Fortunately, the modem I got (a
- Quickcomm Spirit II 14.4/FAX) did not come that way.
-
- Finally, a reliable source for hardware handshaking cables:
-
- Mac Dataflow (410) 569-7636
-
- Just ask for "cable ID 3 from the Hermes docs." Mac Dataflow is not connected
- with the author of Hermes, but I gather they get some regular business from
- Hermes folks, since the Hermes docs mention their company, among others. The
- cables are very high in quality, professional work. Reasonable prices (about $15
- US if I remember right).
-
- I am not affiliated with Mac Dataflow, just a satisfied customer.
