  23. Apple Brings Color Printing Technology to Macintosh Users

  25. SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 6, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc.
  26. today introduced the Apple  Color Printer, a large format color
  27. printer that brings ease of use, high-quality color output, and
  28. versatile paper-handling to Macintosh  computer users who want to use
  29. color in everyday documents and presentations.
  30.     "With our first color printer, we've focused on giving mainstream
  31. Macintosh users a good, solid printer that will handle almost any
  32. type of report, presentation, or business document," said John Moon,
  33. Apple's vice president of Imaging Products.  "The Apple Color Printer
  34. makes it simple for anyone to use color in everyday documents.  And,
  35. it's an important step in our long-term color imaging strategy, which
  36. is to make the use of color easy and routine for all users."

  38. Ease of Use
  39.     From its one-button installation to its no-mess ink cartridges, the
  40. Apple Color Printer is designed for ease of use.  Like all of Apple's
  41. printers, the Apple Color Printer features a one-click installation,
  42. making it simple to set up.  It's also easy to share with other users
  43. because it ships with Apple's new GrayShare  printer software.
  44. GrayShare allows users to share any QuickDraw -based printer, like
  45. the Apple Color Printer, over a network.  The printer also takes
  46. advantage of ColorSync's color matching capabilities, which ensures
  47. that users get color output that closely matches the colors created
  48. on the computer's display.  Another feature that contributes to the
  49. printer's ease of use is its no-mess ink cartridges.  Four self-
  50. contained ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) are easy
  51. to change without the mess typically associated with color printers.
  52. The printer also features a self-cleaning printhead that senses
  53. automatically when the ink jets need to be cleaned, and does so
  54. without user intervention, ensuring high quality output at all times.

  57.     The Apple Color Printer achieves high-quality color output through
  58. the combined benefits of its proprietary GrayShare and ColorSync
  59. software.  The GrayShare printer software gives the printer the
  60. ability to render fine shading of colors, giving images a more
  61. realistic and detailed look.  ColorSync ensures accurate color
  62. matching so that colors users see on the display are reproduced on
  63. the printer, or the closest possible approximation.  In addition to
  64. reproducing exceptional color, the printer also achieves high-quality
  65. blacks--something that is difficult to do in mainstream color
  66. printers.  The printer is based on Canon's BJ820C engine and produces
  67. output at 360 dots per inch (dpi) and 65 screen lines per inch--over
  68. 40 percent greater resolution than 300 dpi printers in its class.
  69. The printer also ships with Apple's full library of TrueType fonts--
  70. 64 fonts in all--giving the Apple Color Printer one of the largest
  71. and broadest offerings of any mainstream color printer.

  74.     One of the most versatile color printers in terms of paper handling,
  75. the Apple Color Printer supports tabloid size (11x17, A3)--especially
  76. important for customers such as engineering professionals who need to
  77. print large drawings--as well as letter, A4, and legal size formats
  78. for general purpose use in the United States or international
  79. markets.  A single paper tray holds all of the different sizes,
  80. eliminating the time and expense of handling multiple paper trays.
  81. And because it prints to transparencies, the Apple Color Printer is
  82. also an ideal solution for mainstream business users who want to
  83. produce color presentations straight from the desktop.
  84.     Special paper is not required with the Apple Color Printer, however
  85. Apple recommends it when printing "best" quality documents.  Plain
  86. bond paper is acceptable for many everyday documents incorporating
  87. images and non-overlapping solid color areas.

  89. matching software, and complements the capabilities of Apple's new
  90. Color OneScanner.  Together, these products provide mainstream

  96.     The Apple Color Printer is compatible with any color-capable
  97. Macintosh system running System 7.  For best performance, Apple
  98. recommends 4 megabytes (MB) of RAM or greater on the CPU.  The Apple
  99. Color Printer will be available worldwide immediately.  Its U.S.
  100. suggested retail price is $2,349.  Pricing may vary outside the
  101. United States.
