  17. First: Are you able to use double-sided (800KB) disks with
  18.        this computer?
  19.        If you can format disks two-sided try the following...

  22.        1-800-663-6395 Ontario, Canada.

  24.        This will give you Mac Plus equivalent if not a bit faster.
  25.        There is also space for up to 8 SIMMS to a total of 4MB.
  26.        The SCSI connector allows use of HARD DRIVE.

  28. Second:Get 8 256KB SIMMS. Since they should be FREE (no use to 
  29.        anyone anymore) get a dozen. You will have extras in case
  30.        one is bad and you can swap/test combinations until they all
  31.        work. (Static charges might kill a SIMM)

  33. For $300 (especially US$300) you should be able to have a 2.5MB
  34. Mac Plus equivalent. There are 16 and 25 MHz upgrades for the 512
  35. but they are more money.

  37. Remember that the above advice is dependent on your Mac being able
  38. to format double-sided (770-800KB) disks. If you can only use
  39. 400KB (single-sided) disks then you have a 512K Mac which must be
  40. upgraded with the 128K ROM and 800K drive kit. You might want to buy
  41. a used Mac Classic or something else for less than a $1000.

  43. If you do upgrade with the NewLife you should try to get a used
  44. hard drive. It makes an improvement on speed of use and convenience.
  45. I have seen System 7.0.1 (maybe System 7.1 too), System 6.0.8,
  46. Word 5.1, Excel 3+4, and most other recent software still be able to
  47. work on a 512Ke (double-sided disks) with the NewLife. You may want
  48. to use System 6.0.x for slightly faster responses.

  50. Note: There are no guarantees that you upgraded 512K is going to last 
  51. very long. I have seen the 512Ke with NewLife still going after two years
  52. though...
