-
- It is remotely possible that this would cause problems, but I have another
- theory.
-
- If you read comp.sys.mac.system, you can find out that my PB160 has also
- lost it's hard disk almost every time after a crash.
-
- On the PB160, I used to press the power key to reboot the machine. Of course,
- the new power key runs some ROM code before the roboot, so I suspect that it
- can flush the system I/O buffers and cache. If one of these is damaged, the
- damages will be written to the hard disk.
-
- I have found that pressing the reset button properly resets the machine
- without causing damage to the disk directory structures.
-
- I would be interested in collecting information from those users who have
- had similar problems with their PowerBooks (Duos too):
-
- - What machine do you have?
- - How much HD? Who made the HD? (Usually IBM, if it's from Apple.)
- - Did you recover the Apple free partition?
- - Do you use Apple's SCSI driver?
- - Do you run your machine in 24-bit mode?
- - What program caused the crash?
- - Did you press reset or the power button to reboot?
- - What were the symptoms? (In my case, the happy mac
- appears for a while and after a while the machine
- reboots again and the cycle is continued forever.)
-
- If I can find a pattern in this information, I'll pass it on to APPLE.BUGS.
- I already sent a report to them, but it's better to have information from
- many sources.
