Subject: Don't turn off your computer for the day, how about a monitor?

While most agree that it's better to have a computer running all day long instead of booting up everytime you have to use, I wonder should we turn off the monitor if we don't use the computer for a few hours.
What I do now is 1) have AfterDark to take care of the screen; 2) dim the monitor to near-black-out level.
But to save more electricity, isn't it better to turn off the monitor. Is there any wear and tear when turning on and off a monitor
