- The Word dictionary and spell checker are much bigger and more thorough than
- the one for Excel. Naturally, a spreadsheet hasn't the same need for a big
- dictionary as a word processor. At a guess, one of the following (or maybe
- both) is/are true: 1) Since Excel doesn't need as big a dictionary, etc, MS has
- provided a small one, for those who aren't using Word, to save the diskspace.
- Since this means a huge waste of disk space for those using both, who I would
- guess are the majority-- 2) The Word spell checker (and maybe the dictionary)
- have been leased from another company, and MS doesn't want to pay the lease fee
- for Excel, which doesn't need it.
-
- Then there's PowerPoint. The installer loads MS Graph and the Equation Editor
- and some converters into a folder in Extensions. The identical files are
- loaded by Word into the Word folder. Why couldn't MS be consistent, and avoid
- this duplication? There's over 1 MB of stuff involved, I think. I haven't
- checked yet to see if PP has supplied still a third dictionary and spell
- checker (but I think it shares those with Excel, at least).
