- Just thought i'd chime in as another Amiga user that jumped
- ship. I got my 1000 in 1986, and in fact it was the machine I cut my
- teeth programming on. I didn't have much problem finding application
- development tools for it(Manx C was fairly spiffy for its time), and the
- ease of programming with windows was a godsend compared to the mac. I
- used to brag to my friends that the Amiga was "Twice the power of a PC
- for half the price".
-
- That was 1986. Times have changed.
-
- With every new release of the OS and new hardware I became more
- and more beleagured by Commodore not keeping up technologically. In 1987
- we were hearing wonderful things about the "Ranger", with it's
- sophisitcated 24-bit graphics and memory-protection. By the time I
- finally gave up on the Amiga, the top of the line machine(the 3000) didn't
- support memory protection(sorry, derivitives of GOMF don't cut the
- mustard), and to make matters worse, the graphics weren't much better
- than the 1000(EHB standard, and a flicker fixer).
-
- Like many other people I know, the evolutionary(not
- revolutionary) development efforts by Commodore, combined with PC's
- becoming a commodity item, finally broke the camels back and I bought a
- PC with comparable horsepower to a 3000, for half the price. [Yes, I
- know 3000's are getting cleared out now, but i'm talking 2 years ago
- even _with_ the educational discount] Since then the situation has only
- gotten worse. Now when friends ask why I don't have an Amiga anymore,
- the response is, "It's half the computer, at twice the price". :-(
-
- There you have it. The original poster wanted to know what PC
- users think of the state of Amiga's, well i've been on both sides of the
- fence extensively. I have to agree with the original developers of the
- Amiga. They held a funeral for the Amiga(casket and all) once they
- realized what Commodore was going to do with their wonderful machine.
-
- Regards,
- Ken
