- On an XT, HD floppies require ROM on the controller card to operate,
- since the BIOS doesn't have the proper code for it. I've never been
- able to get driveparm= to do anything on any version of DOS, so ignore
- it.
-
- The Toshiba 1.44MB drive is the kind I used in my computer. I've used
- them in an XT, and later transferred them to an AT, and then to a 386
- with no problems. The problem is entirely with your floppy controller
- card. Get one meant for connect a HD floppy to an XT. An AT (even an
- 8-bit one) won't have the necessary ROM onboard.
-
- Mine is a no-name "UFDC-100 Universal Floppy Drive Controller". It
- allows you to connect up to four floppy drives (360K, 1.2M, 720K, or
- 1.44M) to an XT. I use the card with my 386 as well, since I haven't
- found a better controller for running three floppy drives at a time.
- After setting the DIP switches to the drive types, and setting the
- media-sense line to PS/2 mode (AT mode won't let me format 720K disks,
- don't ask why), the drives work just fine. I've used this setup on
- every computer I've owned, the first of which was an XT.
-
- What controller card are you using, and what switches/jumpers are
- available?
