- I recently installed an RLL disk/contoller as a secondary disk subsystem
- in a machine that has an IDE drive as its primary drive. The installation
- went well and the results are fine except when I use PC Tools DiskFix
- I get the message "diagnostic track bad or missing." I have not heard
- the term diagnostic track before but I'm guessing it's the place where
- bad track information is permanently stored. Since my RLL controller
- permits entry of bad tracks during LL format, I decided to enter the LL
- format routine through debug and re-enter all the bad tracks that were
- listed on the quality assurance sheet that came with the drive. Of course,
- after that I used fdisk and DOS format to create a viable D: drive but
- DiskFix still complains about the diagnostic track. BTW, without explan-
- ation, Spinrite refused to do its low level format and optimization on
- this disk (DiskFix and Spinrite look very similar - is Gibson Research
- the common supplier?)
-
- I'm wondering what might be broken here. My controller is a Seagate
- ST-22R. Is it creating a diagnostic track that is unacceptable, or for
- that matter, is my assumption about the diagnostic track wrong? Note
- that if I hadn't used PC Tools or Spinrite on this drive, I would
- probably not think anything was wrong with it. I sent a fax to PC Tools
- technical support but they have not responded so I am seeking the wisdom
- of the net. Thanks.
