- Our group has recently purchase two new Hewlett-Packard machines --
- a 9000-710 and a 9000-827. We're planning to use the 710 as a
- network observation console, running HP's OpenView Network Node
- Manager product, which was distributed on DAT. The *only* DAT we
- have is internal to the 827, and that's where my troubles begin.
-
- The copyright protection scheme employed requires that I use the
- 'update' program to load the software. This shouldn't be a problem,
- since 'update' on the 710 can run as a client of 'netdistd' running
- on the 827. Unfortunately, we've hit a few snags. The 710 is running
- HPUX 8.07, while the 827 is running HPUX 8.02. The versions of 'update'
- and 'netdistd' in these releases seem to be different Specifically,
- 8.07 recognizes three types of machine architectures -- 300, 700 and
- 800 -- while 8.02 recognizes only two -- 300, and 800, with 700 machines
- included in the 800 category. Our 710 connects to the 827's netdistd,
- identifies itself as a 700-series machine, and is promptly disconnected
- by the 827 daemon, which has never heard of a 700. 'update' refuses to
- download the requested filesets if I supply the -S800 argument,
- reporting that the specified architecture does not match this machine.
-
- I've found two shameless hacks that have allowed me to get most of what
- I need to do done. First, I was able to run 'update' interactively to
- get the ovinstall program from the DAT filesets. 'ovinstall' handles
- the copyright key validation, and runs 'update' as a subprocess -- but
- I couldn't run it interactively. Thus my second hack, which I just
- thought of and can't yet try: I ftp'd the 'update' program from the
- 827.
-
- We're seeing more and more HP machines on campus. I suspect that I'm
- going to see this problem again. Does a solution have to be this
- ugly?
