- Agreed! I owned a ROM 01 for nearly 3 years, and later had it replaced
- with a ROM 3 cpu. I now have both a ROM 01 and ROM 3 and *much* perfer the 3!
- There's many more enhancements in the ROM 3 cpu than most are unaware of. Those
- that I know of are the following:
-
- o 1.125 megabytes on motherboard
- o 256k ROM *
- o removable clock/bRAM battery
- o Fixes to Ensoniq output. Cleaner sound, and no more "buzzing"
- o Motherboard revamped slightly
- o DMA compatible up to 5 megabytes of RAM
- * o New CDA-control panel, sticky-keys, mouse-keyboard, ability to use
- a slot and device shadowed to it at SAME time (ie- mouse slot#4),
- System 5 tools which gives 8% increase in speed for booting floppies,
- scrolling windows, using menus (even under ProDOS 16). New monitor
- commands which lets your view (instantly switch between) Super-Hi-Res,
- Double-Hi-Res, Hi-Res, and Low/double-Res graphics which are still in
- memory. Digitized "Apple II!" cheer from developers team with the
- ctrl-command-option-n <g>, better control of mouse with five speeds
- (up from two) and a new "mouse" text-control panel, cleaned up
- RAM control panel with option with reset ramdisk, ability to save
- more perferences into battery-ram (ie- ROM CDAs active, cancel
- INIT/CDev icons from being displayed on GS/OS splash screen, etc),
- border flashes when volume level at '0' (off) always -- even at
- cold boot, including other "extras" System 5 gives you. AppleTalk
- can be mapped to slot 1, 2, or 7, many bug fixes in ROM so there's
- a smaller TS3 file to load in (faster to load, and takes a little
- less memory), um er.. says "Copyright Apple Computer 1977-1989" at
- bootup so you think your system is a little less old? (hehe) :-)
-
-
- Overall, after using both systems AND having both to compare side by side,
- I wouldn't want to go back to a ROM 01 for anything! Although, years back
- compatibility with older software was a problem, but that's a thing of the
- past (older software has been patched, and virtually all new programs are fully
- compatible on both the ROM 01 and 3!). I used to hate working on my ROM 01
- which had this high pitched "buzzing" coming from the Ensoniq chip. Every
- time you pulled-down a menu, scrolled a window, opened a dialog box, you'd
- hear this annoying buzz (even under ProDOS 8 with a mouse)! The ROM 3 is
- completely slient working with a mouse...thank god for that! :)
