  15. I have a Maxtor LXT-100S hard drive which has caused me a few headaches.
  16. Nothing really serious like crashing & losing data, but recently it has
  17. produced a string of Read Errors which almost always disappear on Retry
  18. (generally powering down and restarting makes it behave itself for at least
  19. the next few hours).

  21. The `Verify data on drive' option of HDToolbox typically produces several
  22. Bad Block messages, but on different blocks each time! Several times, I
  23. have had `Verify Data' quit midway with the message `Hardware Error 9'.
  24. Can anyone tell me exactly what Hardware Error 9 is?

  26. The original power supply for this drive blew up, and ever since, it has
  27. been very fussy about the 12V supply it gets, tending to spin up & down
  28. irregularly. I put a 'scope on its 12V line & found that it was quite
  29. noisy, but I've smoothed it somewhat by putting a large capacitor on the
  30. 12V line.
