- GIF, which stands for Graphics Interchange Format I think (memory fails me,
- but that seems to be what I remember it as) was developed by CompuServe
- many years ago as a general format to allow any computer to load, view and
- save pictures between each other. Instead of the custom bitmap pictures
- that were very difficult to trade among computers they created a generic
- format. They also released the specs and some viewers, also. It wasn't
- developed for just the IBM PC, but for most anything. It is quite popular
- and use to be about the only format you saw across Usenet's alt.blah.pictures
- newsgroups (now you see a lot of JPEG's, too). The GIF format limits you
- to an 8 bit pallete for color, which is a drawback at times, nowadays. With
- the Amiga community unable to display 8 bit color in native systems, the GIF
- format hasn't been as popular with it as it has been in the Macintosh and
- IBM PC clone worlds. It should become more popular with the AGA systems
- and just about any video board system for Amigas. There are probably
- millions of pictures out there archived in GIF format, you just have to go
- out and find them!
