  14. A post-doctoral position is available in my group at Bull-IMAG
  15. Grenoble, as part of the Esprit Basic Research Project
  16. ``Broadcast''.  This new project is doing research in the area of
  17. large-scale distributed systems, covering the whole ground from paradigms,
  18. algorithms, and architectures, all the way to actual systems.  Broadcast
  19. comprises several groups in Europe: Ecole Polytechnique Federale de
  20. Lausanne (CH), IMAG Grenoble (FR), INESC Lisboa (PT), INRIA Rocquencourt (FR),
  21. IRISA Rennes (FR), University of Bologna (IT), University of 
  22. Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK), and University of Twente (NL).

  24. IMAG is the research institute for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
  25. of the Universities of Grenoble, also sponsored by Centre National de la
  26. Recherche Scientifique. It groups 9 research laboratories, totalling
  27. about 600 persons (including 300 graduate students). Bull-IMAG is one of
  28. these laboratories, specializing in distributed systems and applications;
  29. it has joint sponsorship from Bull. In the last three years, the work has
  30. concentrated on the Guide project, an object-oriented distributed system,
  31. supporting a language for shared distributed objects.

  33. The main tasks of IMAG in Broadcast are:
  34.  
  35. Object replication, group protocols and their use for cooperative work,
  36. system support (addressing, protection, storage) for objects.
  37.  
  38. This work involves cooperation with other partners of the project.
  39. The post-doc is expected to work on either of those aspects, for which
  40. preliminary work has already started. The emphasis is on scalable algorithms,
  41. since the main thrust of Broadcast is on large scale systems.

  43. Post-doctoral candidates with experience in distributed systems, operating
  44. systems, languages for distributed programming, are invited to send
  45. their resume to me (including degrees, professional experience, publications),
  46. together with the names of three professional references.
  47. Applicants are not required to master the French language at the time of
  48. their application.

  50. The technical reports and recent publications produced by our group are
  51. available by anonymous ftp on the server imag.fr (129.88.32.1) in the
  52. pub/GUIDE/doc directory.

  56. Grenoble is located in the French Alps, about 90 km south-east of Lyon
  57. and 140 km south of Geneva. The city has 160 000 inhabitants,
  58. the metropolitan area about 400 000. The city has strong universities and
  59. engineering schools (about 40 000 students) and important high-tech
  60. industries (Bull, Hewlett-Packard, Sun, OSF, France Telecom, among others,
  61. have R&D centers here). There is an active cultural life, as well as
  62. rich opportunities for all-seasons outdoors activities (skiing, climbing,
  63. hiking) within 30 minutes' drive.
