- I was really looking forward to trying this, but no luck so far. Machine
- config follows, then problem description.
-
- 486-33 128K cache
- 32MB RAM
- Paradise 1024i SVGA
- Nanao 9070S
- 3C605 TokenRing
- 3C501 Ethernet
- PSI EasyCache 400 - 4MB RAM - ESDI
- Micropolis 1654-7 ESDI (maybe 1674-7, can't keep the numbers straight)
- Boot Manager
- Beta 2.1 primary partition 64MB
- OS/2 2.0 GA+SP primary partition 50MB
- OS/2 1.20.1 primary partition 27MB
- Maxtor 4380E ESDI
- one 300 MB extended partition - apps, data, swapfile
- Both drives HPFS for all partitions
- Future Domain FD850MEX SCSI host with CD Technology CD-ROM at SCSI 2
-
- Got the beta CD-ROM. Created the install from CD-ROM disks. Booted from
- them and successfully installed all the initial code that gets copied on while
- the screen is in text mode (install + 1-5 of the 3 1/2 inch floppy set - man
- does this CD-ROM install FLY - 2min 15sec from last keypress to re-boot
- notice). Re-boot and wait for Learn to use Mouse, Install pre-selected,
- Install All, Select and Install screen appears. Learn to use mouse works ok,
- but EVERY other button will lock the machine when OK is selected. Waiting
- 10 or so minutes to see if anything happens is not productive. Nothing
- happens on the screen, mouse is dead, keyboard locked, etc.
-
- OK, so what next. Booted from CD install disks and ran chkdsk from CD-ROM
- to repair C:. Edited config.sys (using t2.exe) to remove SCSI support for all
- adapters except for my Future Domain, and re-booted. Same result, lockup
- after selecting OK.
-
- Next attempt. Make disks to install from floppy. Install plus disks 1-5
- proceed normally. Re-boot, get to Install menu, pick something, select OK,
- still hangs the machine. As in previous attempts, re-boot, run chkdsk (from
- disk 2) to repair C:, edit config.sys to remove ALL SCSI, and re-boot.
- Still no change, machine locks up on selecting OK.
-
- Data drive is big enough, so copy CD-ROM install directory (OS2SE21) to
- Maxtor (D:), edit config.sys to point source to this directory, edit user.rsp
- in \OS2\INSTALL to also point to this directory, and remove all SCSI
- references. Re-boot to try again, but no luck.
-
- I may try at home on my less complex system to see if anything changes.
- If anyone has any ideas, I want to hear them.
-
- The system has been an OS/2 machine for many years. Various things have
- changed from time to time, the SCSI CD-ROM was the latest thing to be added.
- OS/2 2.0 has been on the machine since late summer 91 when the 6.307E beta
- was released. I consider OS/2 2.0 to be the most stable OS to ever have run
- on any computer that I have ever owned (since pre-IBM PC days back in 1979
- when I got my first computer). I measure stability by the number of reboots
- per poweron time (days, weeks, etc.) when I am not reconfiguring H/W or
- System S/W (OS, LAN, Comms, things that result in Config.sys changes).
