- My 2 cents:
-
- In the days of DOS, Ctrl-Alt-Del was a very handy thing and worked quite
- nicely. It rebooted your machine.
-
- In these days of Windows and OS/2, however, this becomes something of a
- problem. Reboot a single-tasking computer and you know exactly what you're
- doing. You lose one program, and possibly some changes to your data for that
- program. Reboot OS/2, and you lose one program, and the Workplace shell, and
- your editor, and your other session running god-knows-what, and this all
- happens intantly when you hit one key combination.
-
- Scenario: A user fairly new to OS/2 is running a full-screen DOS app and it
- hangs. What do thay do? Why the tried-and-true Ctrl-Alt-Del will do it!
- Oops. Well, it _looked_ like DOS. I forgot I was running CriticalApp in
- another window. Too late now...
-
- (note: this has happened to me (although, admittedly, CriticalApp wasn't that
- critical)).
-
- Nevertheless, Ctrl-Alt-Del should still be able to get you out if everything
- comes crashing down around you, even in OS/2. Simple solution: Ctrl-Alt-Del
- pops up a little box (just like the shutdown box), that says "Whoa! You're in
- OS/2 now, remember? Sure you want to do this? I could just kill off that one
- app for you if you want, or you can go on and reboot the whole machine." (ok,
- so the wording would be a bit different).
-
- Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't accidentally wipe out everything, but Ctrl-Alt-Del can get
- you out of a system hang. Bingo.
