  14. In the days of DOS, Ctrl-Alt-Del was a very handy thing and worked quite
  15. nicely.  It rebooted your machine.
  16.  
  17. In these days of Windows and OS/2, however, this becomes something of a
  18. problem.  Reboot a single-tasking computer and you know exactly what you're
  19. doing.  You lose one program, and possibly some changes to your data for that
  20. program.  Reboot OS/2, and you lose one program, and the Workplace shell, and
  21. your editor, and your other session running god-knows-what, and this all
  22. happens intantly when you hit one key combination.

  24. Scenario:  A user fairly new to OS/2 is running a full-screen DOS app and it
  25. hangs.  What do thay do?  Why the tried-and-true Ctrl-Alt-Del will do it!
  26. Oops.  Well, it _looked_ like DOS.  I forgot I was running CriticalApp in
  27. another window.  Too late now...

  29. (note:  this has happened to me (although, admittedly, CriticalApp wasn't that
  30. critical)).

  32. Nevertheless, Ctrl-Alt-Del should still be able to get you out if everything
  33. comes crashing down around you, even in OS/2.  Simple solution:  Ctrl-Alt-Del
  34. pops up a little box (just like the shutdown box), that says "Whoa!  You're in
  35. OS/2 now, remember?  Sure you want to do this?  I could just kill off that one
  36. app for you if you want, or you can go on and reboot the whole machine." (ok,
  37. so the wording would be a bit different).

  39. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't accidentally wipe out everything, but Ctrl-Alt-Del can get
  40. you out of a system hang.  Bingo.
