  13. I am trying to get the drivers in the file "tri32new.zip" from
  14. ftp-os2 to work with my ATI Ultra with no success.  Up to now, I have
  15. been using the standard 8514 drivers supplied with os2.  I have
  16. installed the service pack and am running the 32-bit graphics engine.

  18. I have tried a number of times to install these (carefully following
  19. Steve Withers' ammended instructions), but when I reboot, I 
  20. get a blank screen.  On one iteration, os2 printed an error message
  21. (maybe it was error #355?) about incompatible display driver or VIO, or
  22. some such when WPS should have come up.  Other iterations have produced 
  23. a blank screen with an underline cursor in the upper left, and with 
  24. c000005 in the upper left.  In all cases a power-down boot was
  25. required.

  27. Questions:

  29. Is it worth the bother for ATI Ultra owners who aren't really chomping at the
  30. bit for seamless win-os2 drivers?  Will the performance be better or
  31. worse than with the 8514 drivers?  I am currently experiencing
  32. intolerably slow scrolling in PMX xterm windows and wanted to try these
  33. drivers to see if it would improve.

  35. These drivers are supposed to work with the Ultra, aren't they?

  37. I tried installing them right over the 8514 driver with no success, then
  38. went back and installed the standard vga drivers, and tried to install
  39. these svga drivers on top of that, with the same result.  I also tried the
  40. svga option in the os2 selective install, hoping to install the tri32new
  41. drivers over whatever svga drivers come with os2+sp, hoping this step
  42. would at least get my config.sys mostly right.  When I tried to install
  43. the os2+sp drivers the selective install program printed an error
  44. message about not being configured to install "%s" (sic), before asking
  45. for the device driver disks.

  47. How much mucking around with config.sys, etc., is required?  I changed
  48. that line with "......(bvhvga)" to ......(bvhvga,bvhsvga), and I changed
  49. the reference to vvga into a reference to vsvga.
  50.  
  51. Should I just be patient and wait for IBM to do a 32-bit 8514 driver,
  52. or for ATI to do a 32-bit driver for the Ultra? 
  53. Will such drivers be available in os2 2.1?

  55. Correspondence with someone who has gotten this to work (perhaps
  56. containing appropriate config.sys statements, etc.) would be greatly
  57. appreciated.
